PLAYING STYLE Story, characters, and dice.
ROLE PLAYING GAMES I've played and run a huge number of RPGs. Here is a selection: - 1st ed AD&D (in Judges Guild's Wilderlands/City States, Mystara, Midkemia, Oriental Adventures, Spelljammer, Dragonlance and Thieves World) - Traveller - Gamma World - Call of Cthulhu - Runequest - Stormbringer - Basic Role-Playing (BRP) - Ringworld - Fading Suns - FASA Star Trek - Vampire the Masquerade - Warhammer Fantasy RP - Rogue Trader - Shadowrun - Cyberpunk - Tunnels and Trolls - Paranoia - Dragonquest - Middle Earth Role-Playing (MERP) - Rolemaster - Chivalry and Sorcery - Pendragon - GURPS - Star Frontiers - Toon - Savage Worlds - Bureau 13 - Harnmaster - Lands of Adventure
And whatever else I've forgotten… I also own quite a few that I’ve yet to try.
BOARD GAMES I mostly like old RPG-related games, such as those for Glorantha, Traveller, Stormbringer, Lord of the Rings, Cthulhu and so forth. I also like Star Trek games, and derivatives such as Battlestations and The Captain is Dead. I’ve played and own quite a few more board games.
MINIATURE WAR GAMES I have played a little Warhammer and Battlesystem, Star Fleet Battles, and Space Hulk. Not so into that now, but if there’s a tie-in to an RPG I like, then I’m in. I also like Crimson Skies and Heroquest.
LIVE ACTION ROLE PLAYING GAMES Haven't done this in many years, although I wrote and ran a game at an SCA event, and I was in an After School Special with some SCAdians and Marklanders. I was in on some of the first Nero games. I was also in a video with some Darkon people, which was used for the Gods of War II website.
COMPUTER / CONSOLE GAMES As far as consoles, I’ve owned an Intellivision, Ataris 2600 and 5200, and TurboGrafx. My gaming has been on a PC since then. I loved all the old RPG games, Wizardry, Ultima, Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, all the old SSI Dungeons and Dragons games, the Elder Scrolls games, Fallout, Diablo, Krondor, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, System Shock, Vampire and Thief. I also played Simcity, Civilization, Alpha Centauri, Master of Magic/Master of Orion, Alone in the Dark, Heroes of Might and Magic, King of Dragon Pass, Age of Wonders, and three big moving boxes' worth of CDs (I don't have all the old floppy games anymore). I avoid real-time strategy, although I remember Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans fondly. ("Stop poking me!") I went through a phase where I played flight sims (including space-fighters and submarines). I’m currently re-playing Skyrim, and I’ll move on to Fallout 4 next.
MMOs Let's see, I've tried Kesmai, the old Neverwinter Nights, Gemstone, Yserbius, Meridian 59, The Realm, Ultima, Everquest, Asheron and Anarchy Online. I've played in Neverwinter Nights persistent worlds online as well. Does Second Life count? And more recently, I played Middle Earth Online.
MOBILE PHONE GAMES I tried a bunch of these, but ultimately I got tired of them. I’m not really into puzzles, shooters or action games, and I can’t really get into RPGs and strategy on a phone.
CARD GAMES No thanks.
BEER Yes please.
MY PREFERRED GAMING STORE Aero Hobbies, Santa Monica, CA, "The Home of the Thief." OH NO, OUT OF BUSINESS AS OF NOVEMBER 2019!
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME I've been gaming since the late 70s, and ran a 1st edition AD&D campaign for twenty years. Most of my gaming is online via Roll20 and Discord these days.
