I've seen this crop up before in various blog posts. Apparently the theory is that the existence of published or even "official" settings is intimidating and stifles the creativity necessary to produce unique settings for our own tables.
I don't see it. Unless it's a "setting as game" product like Star Wars, or Trek's Federation, where the whole point of the game is to play in somebody else's setting.
Some folks even post that they find an official published setting to be a necessity for an RPG. Obviously I don't fall into that camp, quite the opposite. I'm much more inclined to ignore a provided setting.
