I'm getting tired of reading this and that online about these issues, so let's settle them once and for all. I'd like to hear from folks of various ages, and with various amounts of RPG experience.
In the 70s and early 80s, when our hobby was still new, when we gamed we sat down to play an adventure module. Either purchased or authored by the DM. Locations were detailed, NPCs had motivations and plans that would play out unless PCs interfered. That's a STORY.
We didn't sit down and ignore the clues that the DM presented, because we weren't dicks. That's the adventure he had prepared for us. There was no cry of "railroad" because no one EVER thought to complain; that's how D&D is played! The DM describes what IS, and the players react. RE ACT.
Players get to create and make a persona, try to equip him, and then cleverly overcome obstacles. According to the rules, not just making up whatever they want. That's the game.
Players know their characters are extremely vulnerable, and can handle frequent character death. Because there's no suspense, no thrill, if there is no risk, if there are no consequences.
Why is there STILL arguing about this?! This is what an RPG is. I was there. If some folks want to have co-op joint story telling with invulnerable godlike protagonists, they need new acronyms. I know what an RPG is.
