I found out last week that the famous Lee Gold, a game author for FGU and GURPS, lives in my neighborhood. She's also the founder of Alarums and Excursions (look it up)! Best of all, she invited me to play in her current campaign, using her game Lands of Adventure (FGU). So I said yes. It's set in fantasy Iceland in 991 AD. I'm playing an Irish/Norse captain of his own trading vessel. He's been sent to spy by the King of Dublin. I'm looking forward to it!
Which brings to mind that Niall Shapiro also lives around here. He wrote the FGU game Other Suns. He also invited me to play his campaign, but it has a lot of time-travel and it didn't seem like a good fit for me.
Which also brings to mind that Steve Perrin lives an hour or two away from me. He's the creator of Runequest, and thus the whole Chaosium Basic Role-Playing system as well as Call of Cthulhu and the whole Elric/Stormbringer thing. His game is just so far away that it won't work out for me logistically, but boy do I wish I could play!
And finally, Len Lakofka lives an hour or so from me in a different direction. You will recall him as the author of the Leomund's Tiny Hut column in Dragon Magazine back in the day. He actually expressed interest in joining MY campaign at the time, but he no longer drives and we never managed to get the logistics together.
Quite a neat area that I live in!
